Will somebody PLEASE pick up the phone?!

My kids have swimming lessons out the park districts outdoor pool. Today as we head out to lessons, we find it is raining rather strongly. When I call to find out if lessons will be canceled, I get an automated message saying the pool is open for regular hours. (The same recorded message thats been playing all day.) Wading through the menu options in hopes of talking to an actual human being, I get "If you would like to leave a message, please do so after the beep" followed by a click and a dial tone. A call to the "weather Line" informs me that all softball games are still to be played, weather permitting. After calling the admin office, I finally get a human(?) being, who tranfers me to someone else who puts me on hold. Never mind, i'ts raining, no swimming for us.

And while I'm not making any progress on WIP fics, some thing did pop into my head as a start to the "Happily Ever After?" AU that is eating my brain. I've noticed that lots of fics just assume that if Yugi were to lose the final duel, Atem would suddenly become solid and everyone would live happily ever after. But, what if its not that simple? What if the Ishtars neglected to mention a few critical details? These kind of thoughts led to the following snippet:

"If your plan succeeds Timelord, I will do as you ask and the Ishtars may live. If my pharaoh loses the duel and we must go into the west, I will accept it as the will of the gods and again, the Ishtars may live. But, if your plan fails...If Yugi loses the duel, if Yugi dies, then they will find no sanctuary in this or any other realm. I will hunt them down, and I will destroy them utterly." The shadow mage stepped foward until he was nose to nose with the Doctor. "I know of your power Timelord, but you know nothing of mine..."

"Veddy IN-ter-resting......"

Maha'ad doesn't like the Ishtars very much, I take it?

Weeelllll, they said the pharaoh has to be defeated so his soul can find rest, but they never mention exactly what would happen if the pharaoh wins. What if that door to the world of the dead opens to claim the soul of whoever loses REGARDLESS of who the loser is? This AU eating my brain starts with the idea that that is exactly what would happen, but the Ishtars conveniatly forgot to inform Yugi and Atem of this...

Calling a number and then hitting "0" repeatedly often - well, sometimes (?) - works to short the system enough to get you to a live person, even if it's not the "right" person in the "right" department to begin with. 9,9 *DESPISES the phone to begin with*

Heh . . . DAMN - can't wait for that! And I think I FINALLY have the brain and time and what-not to get on "Unfinished-3" in earnest when I get home today or tomorrow.

HMMM, may try that 0 thing just for the chance of screwing up their phone systems. GRRRR..

Cool! I've been wondering what your take on it will be. (And the Big Z makes ANOTHER escape attempt! BWAA HA HA!) And meanwhile the Magic Man is getting scarier and scarier. I think it's best if "Happy" remains an AU

Doesn't /always/ work, but I've found it does about as often as not. 9,9

And meanwhile the Magic Man is getting scarier and scarier. I think it's best if "Happy" remains an AU

LOL Yeah, he can be scary to begin with! *LUFFS DM...*

Oooh, interesting crossover. Though I always do have a REALLY hard time wrapping my mind around animation/live-action crossovers.

I've noticed that lots of fics just assume that if Yugi were to lose the final duel, Atem would suddenly become solid and everyone would live happily ever after.

I don't get that at ALL. I'm pretty sure the implication was that if Yugi lost, then things would go on as they were, with Yami living in Yugi's head. Wasn't that the point, that this was an untenable situation and BOTH of them had to move on?

You know, as much as I rebelled when I originally saw the spoilers for the final duel, by the time I actually saw it, I came to the belief that this was the ONLY way it could have ended. Yami staying would just be wrong. The whole point was that they each grew from their opposite extremes to be more like the other, and then it was time for them to each be their own SEPARATE people. So... yeah. I don't like to read many Yami-sticks-around post-canon fics anymore.

The wonderful thing about Dr. Who, is that it can be believeably crossed with almost anything, and IMHO the whole "block transfer computation" (mathamatical codes used to create matter from energy) idea introduced in classic Dr. Who is the only way to explain solid Yami. In the first "happily Ever After?" ficlet I posted here, Atem mentions this to Yugi while admiting that he doesn't understand how it works.

Right now I'm using this AU to explore the idea that the final duel was also a test of Yugi's strength and his ability to control the magic of the shadows in his own right, with the possibility of dire consequences if he fails the test.It started out as humor in the first 3 parts, but again I'm thinking serious thoughts. I've got to stop doing that! :P

For me, it isn't the physical/pseudo-science issues that make it not work for me. It's the thematic ones. Yugi's and Yami's journey together was DONE. Yami NEEDED to go home and Yugi NEEDED to go on without him, just like Luke needed to go on without Obi-Wan. That's just how the hero arc works.

I agree that they needed to seperate and it was Yami's time to go., which is why this will stay in my LJ as anJust for fun AU. If you look at my Yami doesn't go to the afterlife post, it's actually a bit of a send up of those lovey dovey yami stays fics. I just can't helpwondering how it would really have been like if he stayed.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. And I wasn't knocking your fic, btw. Just the whole concept with a lot of fans that the ending was bad or wrong because Yami didn't stay and get a "happily ever after" with Yugi. 'Cause personally, I think him getting to move on WAS a happily ever after. A bittersweet one, but still.
